Jammu Introduction

JammuNestling in the foothills of the Himalayas, with the river Tawi flowing alongside, is the place that Raja Jambu Lochan discovered one day while he was on a hunting trip. Jammu is the second largest city of the northern Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir and is also its winter capital. Divided into two separate cities, the old town of Jammu is located on a hilltop overlooking the river Tawi while the new town is situated across the river, several kilometers away.

§ Mata Vaishno Devi
Mata Vaishno Devi shrine as their destination, which is quite close by. However, the spirit of holiness permeates through the entire city, so much so that Jammu is also known as the 'City of Temples'. If Bahu Mata is the presiding deity of Jammu, the dargah of Peer Budhan Ali Shah is the other shrine that s believed to protect Jammuites.
§ Amar Mahal Palace Museum
Amar Mahal Palace Museum is a beautiful palace of red sandstone, which stands amidst the most picturesque environs of Jammu. There is beautiful view of the Shivaliks in the north and river Tawi flows to the south adding to the grandeur. This was once the residential palace of Raja Amar Singh but now has been converted into a museum and is looked after by Hari-Tara Charitable trust.
§ Bawey Wali Mata Temple
The famous temple of Bawey Wali Mata is inside the Bahu Fort where, every Tuesday and Sunday, pilgrims throng to worship the goddess. A little further away, on a spur opposite the Bahu Fort, overlooking the river Tawi, stands a temple dedicated to Mahamaya, a Dogra heroine who lost her life fourteen centuries ago fighting foreign invaders.
§ Ranbireshwar Temple
The Peer Kho cave temple overlooking the Tawi River, the Panchbakhtar temple and the Ranbireshwar temple are the other well-known Shiva temples in Jammu. Each has its own legend, its devotees and specific days of worship. In Ranbireshwar Temple, there are twelve Shiva 'lingams' of crystal measuring 12" to 18" and galleries with thousands of 'saligrams' fixed on stone slabs.

§ Srinagar
Srinagar is located in the western part of the state of Jammu and Kashmir, in the northern region of India. It is located in the Kashmir valley. The weather in Srinagar is alpine. It experiences heavy snowfall in December- February.
§ Katra
Katra Town, lying in the foot of Trikuta Mountains, 48 kms from Jammu, serves as the base camp for visiting the famous shrine of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi, which is approachable on foot along a 13 kms long well laid footpath. Every year, more than 4.5 million pilgrims pass through Katra on their way to the holy shrine.
§ Amarnath Yatra
Sitting in a narrow gorge at the end of the Lidder valley, the cave is at a height of 3,888 metres. 141 kms from Srinagar, the cave shrine is visited by hundreds of thousands of pilgrims on an annual trek. The most common route begins from Chandanwari up to Amarnath and back in a five-day journey.
