§ Mysore Palace |
|
The Mysore Palace was built over one thousand years ago, in AD 897. Seracenic in style, the palace has both Hindu as well as Muslim influences. After a fire in 1897, Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV rebuilt the palace as we see it today, under the supervision of architect Henry Irwin. . A temple is situated within the royal courtyard.

§ Chamundi Hills |

Atop the 1,100-feet-high Chamundi Hills, is the temple dedicated to the Goddess Chamundeshwari, the royal family's patron deity. One may reach the temple either through a 13-km drive or climb the 1,000 stone steps. Near the temple is the huge statue of Mahishasura, the demon that had been killed by the Goddess. Halfway up along the stone steps, is the 300-year old 4.8-metre monolithic statue of Nandi Bull, chosen mount of Lord Shiva.

Established in 1875, this museum preserves the articles made in 1861 for the wedding of Krishnaraja Wadiyar. Its collection of paintings is remarkable and S L Haldekar's 'Woman with the Lamp' on the first floor stands out in the collection. Switch off the lights and walk towards the painting and you have the illusion as if it is the lady with the lamp who is advancing towards you.

The zoo of Mysore is no less attractive to tourists. 3 km east to the palace on 37 hectares of land it is covered with green forest. Surrounded by ditch under the blue sky there are tigers, lions, elephants etc numbering 1500 in the zoo. Collection of birds and reptiles is also notable.

The 3 km long, 40 m high dam stands on river Cauvery, 16 km away from Sriranga-patnam, 22 km from Mysore, 28 km from Somnathpur and 153 km from Bangalore. Envisaged by M Visveswaraya, this dam, built to provide water to the Simsa Hydro-Electric Power Project on Shivasamudram, is fashioned out of stone sans cement. The reservoir, occupying 130 sq km, can be used for boating. Below lie the lovely Vrindavam Gardens laid out in steps.
