Srinagar Introduction

SrinagarSrinagar is located in the western part of the state of Jammu and Kashmir, in the northern region of India. Srinagar is the summer capital of the state of Jammu and Kashmir and is the pride of the beautiful valley of Kashmir. Srinagar is famous for its lakes and the charming rows of houseboats floating on them. It is also known for traditional Kashmiri handicrafts and dry fruits. It experiences heavy snowfall in December-February.

§ Valley of Kashmir
The valley of Kashmir, in which Srinagar is located, is also referred to as being a heaven on earth. The Mughal emperor Jahangir was so captivated by the beauty of this valley that he exclaimed "Gar firdaus, ruhe zamin ast, hamin asto, hamin asto, hamin asto".
§ Keshorai Math
This temple is of great significance for its architectural beauty. The temple has been made of huge stones and the inscription on the stone of the main door reveals that around 1682 A.D., a person by the name of 'Keshorai' got this temple constructed.
§ Dal Lake
The Dal Lake is an important tourist attraction of Srinagar. It is located on the eastern end of the city. The Dal Lake comprises of a series of lakes, including the Nagin Lake some 8 kms from the city center.
§ Mughal Gardens
The other major attractions of Srinagar city are the well laid out Mughal styled gardens. The Shalimar Bagh and the Nishat Bagh are beautiful gardens located to the far eastern side of the Dal Lake . One can take a stroll amongst these green and attractive gardens and enjoy the waterworks within them.

§ Jammu
Nestling in the foothills of the Himalayas, with the river Tawi flowing alongside, is the place that Raja Jambu Lochan discovered one day while he was on a hunting trip. He was so struck by this unusual sight that he decided to build a city on this land where no living creature seemed to bear enmity towards each other.
§ Pahalgam
It is 96 kms from Srinagar, is a resort set in a pristine village lying next to the Lidder River. Surrounded with fragrant pine forests, the idyllic resort includes a golf course and spots for angling.
§ Wullar Lake
The largest fresh-water lake in India , is 60 kms from Srinagar. Fed by the Jhelum River, the lake is spread over a 125 kms expanse. Swift flowing winds keep the water of the lake turbulent and shimmering in sunlight. Wullar is the habitat for several migratory and indigenous bird species.
