Vijayawada Introduction

VijayawadaVijayawada is an important port in south India and is considered to be the cultural capital of the state of Andhra Pradesh. Situated at the head of the Krishna Delta, Vijayawada derives its name from that of its presiding deity goddess Vijaya. Vijayawada is at a distance of 70 kms from the sea and is surrounded by bare granite hills. The place is famous for its rock mountains and the rivers that cut through them. Vijayawada is famous for its delicious mangoes and pickles as also its delicious, spicy cuisine.

§ Victoria Jubilee Museum
The Museum of the Archaeological Department situated on Bundar Road contains sculptures and painting. Pre historic materials, such as stone tools, microliths and Neolithic implements are also on display.
§ Kondapalli
Kondapalli village, the famous toy-making centre is located 14 kms northwest of Vijayawada . The toys are usually made of light wood called 'Poniki' and lacquered in brilliant colours. These colourful toys depict themes centered on rural life, mythological characters, animals, birds, fruits, vegetables and houses. You can see craftsmen working on carvings in the village.
§ Kanaka Durga Temple
Kanaka Durga, goddess of power, is the presiding deity of Vijayawada . The city derives its name from the goddess, also known as Vijaya. The temple of the goddess is situated on the Indrakila hill along the river.
§ Gandhi Stupa
The tall Gandhi Stupa situated on Gandhi Hill, was erected in 1968, in memory of Mahatma Gandhi, Father of the nation. Gandhi's teachings are inscribed on stone slabs. There is also a memorial Library, a planetarium on the hill. A toy train skirts the hill.

§ Mogalrajapuram
Mogalrajapuram caves located 3 kms east of the Vijayawada city has five rocks cut sanctuaries dating back to the 7th century AD. The Mogalarajapuram temple has an "Ardhanarisvara" statue, which is thought to be the earliest in South India .
§ Amaravati
It is situated 66 kms away from Vijayawada. Buddhists consider it the most sacred pilgrim centre. Many years ago, an emissary of Emperor Ashoka, who went to propagate Buddhism in this region, laid the foundation of the Great Stupa at Amaravati.
§ Kuchipudi
It is situated 60 kms away from Vijayawada. Kuchipudi dance, one of the oldest forms of classical Indian dance has its roots here. It is the birthplace of Siddhandre yogi, who founded this dance. A famous Kuchipudi dance training school is also located here.
